Robert E. Nowak, "Chief," born August 21, 1936 to James and Ruth Nowak in Stratton, Colorado. He moved to Idaho Springs July 4, 1937 where he maintained a permanent residency the rest of his life. He is survived by his brother Raymond (Jessica), and his nephews Michael (Sue) and Richard. He also had a great nephew Raymond. After graduating high school, he served in the Navy from 1953-1957. After that, he joined the Navy Reserves from 1957-1962. While stationed in California he attended Barber College. He moved back to Idaho Springs and opened a barber shop in Littleton. After his time as a barber he joined the Idaho Springs police department. During his time there he rose in the ranks to become the Chief of Police. He held that position until his retirement in the 70's. He also was a volunteer fireman during that time. After retirement, he opened the Chief's Place, a pinball and game arcade for youths and tourists. He enjoyed gaming, fishing, and tinkering.
A funeral and reception will be held Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at 11:00 AM at the Elks Club, 1600 Colorado Blvd, Idaho Springs, CO 80452. (Where he was a member since 1962.) Interment will follow at Idaho Springs cemetery with police and military honors.
